MGETR is more than just an accounting exercise. It’s a vital source of funding that can directly support creativity, staffing and public access in museums and galleries. This resource includes a webinar recording and other MGETR information and resources.
This webinar is be led by Museums and Galleries Exhibition Tax Relief (MGETR) expert, Mo Suleman, who explains why MGETR is more than just an accounting exercise, and why it’s a vital source of funding that can directly support creativity, staffing and public access in museums and galleries. Even if you are a council run museum that doesn’t currently claim MGETR, Mo covers what councils can do to allow them to claim.
Mo is joined by Rachel Crewes, CEO at Harewood House, who shares how Harewood House maximised the benefits of the scheme, working with Mo to successfully claim far more than they had previously received or expected.
We were able to offer the live webinar free of charge at the point of access thanks to Mo Suleman, Harewood House, and support using public funding by Arts Council England.
Speakers:
Mo Suleman, MGETR Expert
Mo is a qualified accountant, Finance Director, trustee, and museum-sector specialist with a particular focus on helping cultural organisations make better use of Museums and Galleries Exhibition Tax Relief (MGETR). Mo is currently the Treasurer of the Museums Association, and previously served as Director of Resources at Derby Museums. That combination means he understand both the strategic and practical realities of running museums — from governance and budgets through to exhibitions and delivery on the ground.
Over the last few years, he’s worked as an external consultant on MGETR, helping museums across the UK secure over £2m in additional tax relief. Much of this has come from identifying under-claimed costs, correcting common misconceptions around eligibility, and reviewing historic submissions. Mo is very passionate about Museums and wants to do his bit in helping them become more financially sustainable.
Mo holds a number of other non-exec roles with Derbyshire County Cricket Club, Marketing Derby and University of Derby. Mo was named Entrepreneur of the Year (2017) by the East Midlands Chamber of Commerce and Finance Leader and Overall Leader of the Year (2024) by the East Midlands Business Desk.
