Thursdays 28 May + 4 June, 10:00 – 12:30 each day
This live virtual training over two online sessions, guides participants through the lending and borrowing process when borrowing from UK public museums and galleries.
The training covers the perspective of both the lender and borrow to provide a holistic understanding of the process, with an emphasis on building the knowledge and confidence of staff and volunteers in borrowing organisations.
For 2026, we have updated the content to reflect the research and findings from ‘Lending and Borrowing Today: 2025 Review’ (due for publication in May/June 2026) and ‘Temporary and Touring Exhibitions Practice: Economic, Production and Partnership Models‘ (published April 2026)
Arts Council England’s GIS team will deliver the session on GIS within this training, so it’s an excellent opportunity to hear from them directly and ask questions.
This is a live and interactive training based on discussion and problem solving, covering:
- The benefits of borrowing
- Researching suitable objects for loan
- Making a case to borrow
- Communicating with lenders
- Loan applications
- Fees and contracts
- Scheduling
- Transportation
- Facilities reports
- British Government Indemnity Scheme (GIS)* and UK commercial insurance
- Security
- Emergency planning
The training is delivered by an experienced TEG Training and the Arts Council England GIS team.
Zoom breakout rooms are used for discussions and activities in small groups. The number of participants is capped at 24 to support an interactive learning experience.
* HM Government provides Government Indemnity and the GIS team Arts Council England arrange the indemnity.
Automated closed captions are provided on Zoom. BSL and/or live closed captions can be provided if requested at least 3 weeks in advance.  Slides and training materials are provided in advance.  Each session is recorded and made available (unedited and not for download) for one week following the end of the training.Â
