Artistic Commissioning

This online, interactive course takes place over 2 x online sessions:

09:30 – 12:30 Thursday 5 December 2024

09:30 – 12:30 Thursday 12 December 2024

This brand-new TEG training has been developed in response to sector needs for guidance on commissioning and delivering projects and installations in collaboration with artists and creative practitioners.

The online training enables participants to look in-depth at why and how you might commission a contemporary artist to create new work as part of a temporary exhibition or touring project.  Through vibrant discussion, knowledge sharing and presentations of case studies and examples of good practice; different creative approaches to artistic commissioning will be explored.

The roles and responsibilities of the commissioner and artist will be outlined and participants will be given an opportunity to discuss benefits and risks associated with this type of work as well as talking through any issues or complications that can arise when working on complex partnership commissioning projects.

The training is live, interactive and delivered by Gemma Hollington, who has over 15 years’ experience of creative commissioning and exhibition management, having worked with some of the world’s most renowned institutions, museums and artists.

Gemma will be joined for a short presentation and Q&A by the director of a UK commercial gallery, who will speak about the commissions undertaken by gallery artists and the role that commercial galleries can play in supporting the development and delivery of commissions.

Zoom breakout rooms will be used for discussions and activities in small groups.  The number of participants is limited to facilitate online learning and participation.

Automated closed captions are provided on Zoom. BSL and/or live closed captions can be provided if requested before 11 November 2024.

We expect to run this training again in autumn 2025.
